The Common Types of Sedation Dentistry

If you’ve never been able to sit comfortably at the dentist’s chair and you worry about every dental procedure you might need, you may need certain methods so you feel relaxed and calm before any work is done on your teeth. Sedation dentistry is the best recourse for people who have a certain fear or anxiousness when visiting their dentists. There are many ways that sedation can be applied to a person. This all depends on the age of the patient, the treatment needed and other factors. Here are some of the most common types of sedation dentistry:

Laughing gas or nitrous oxide is one of the most popular and common types of sedation dentistry. The patient inhales the gas which gives them a sense of calmness, relaxation and elation. This helps calm down patients and do away with their anxiety. This is also one of the safest types of sedation and you can even go home without supervision or assistance after the treatment.

Oral sedation is a second type of sedation dentistry, where in the patient is made to take medication or pill that will make them sleepy. The level or sedation depends on the dosage given to the patient. This is also pretty common and a number of patients can fall asleep while under the effects of the pill.

Another type of sedation dentistry is done intravenously (IV). Like an actual patient in the hospital, the patient receives a catheter and the sedative medication is administered straight into the blood stream. This works faster than any other type of sedation dentistry and can be adjusted depending on the needs of the procedure.

With all the different types of sedation dentistry, it’s best to consult with your dentist if it is applicable for your situation or procedure. Our team at Aark Dental will be able to make an informed decision and whether or not sedation is necessary for you. Contact us today!
